A Great Trip

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to travel to Israel to visit the Zerto office there. Although I was there for business, fortunately I was able to get out and visit some incredible locations in Israel.

For example, there are some awesome wineries and vineyards. We toured one of the largest ones and enjoyed some of the fruit of the vine.

Perhaps my favorite location was Masada. Being on top of the mountain and the seeing the Dead Sea and the panoramic views were something that’s just hard to put into words how impressive it is.

Wow #3: Zerto

I’ve been working for the same IT consulting company for 13 years.

During that time, I’ve watched many advancements in the datacenter. While some advancements were predictable but appreciated, some of them had a “Wow” factor that opened up whole new opportunities.

Wow #1

I got lucky enough to be part of a team that saw the potential of server virtualization and we were very early adopters of something called ESX server.

When I say early, I mean early. I’m VCP #12, so I’ve been with it from the beginning. I remember when I first saw ESX in action, it certainly had the “Wow” factor. I was impressed with the concept and to find that it actually worked and was stable enough for production workloads, it was a great time to be in the IT consulting business.

vMotion. I can remember my comment when I first saw vMotion. “Wow”.

Looking For the Next Wow

With ESX 1.5, VMware produced a product that was enough to make me change the direction of my professional career so I have a great deal of appreciation for them.

So when I decided to focus on the Disaster Recovery segment of the virtualization industry over a year ago, I focused on Site Recovery Manager (SRM). Over the past 10+ months, I’ve done one SRM project after another at large enterprise-sized companies. I’ve helped design, deploy and enable companies with array-based replication to recover from disasters for thousands of servers.

While SRM is significant and a great workflow product that glues together many things, its just not a “Wow” product when using the standards of ESX and vMotion.

Wow #3

I was a delegate at Tech Field Day 6. Zerto presented to us under NDA before they officially released 1.0 a few weeks later. Knowing how SRM works and comparing it with how Zerto approached DR, I was very impressed and interested in seeing it in action because it greatly simplifies the whole process of virtualized DR.

The more I’ve had the opportunity to actually work with Zerto in production, the more impressed I have been with its capabilities. That includes the Zerto team behind the products.

Zerto is where I have found Wow #3. With Zerto, I find a company that is producing innovative products and they have changed the direction of my career once again.

Starting August 24th, I will be the Senior Technical Marketing Architect for Zerto.
