Citrix, Please Get Ubuntu as a Supported Guest in XenServer (an ode to Queen)

By ssnowden

One thing Iwant to follow up on  my “10 minutes to Mediawiki” is to point out that it really applies to hypervisors that have Ubuntu as a supported guest.

(Note: To experience the full impact of the rest of this post, please start this song before reading the rest)

If you want to install on XenServer 5.0  you have to do a significant workaround to get it working. I’ve gotten this working in the past, but I don’t want to have to do this again.  I was really hoping that it would be in the XenServer 5.5 release, but I don’t see it there.

I suppose I could try to “roll my own” using these directions to create a XGT template, but there are only so many hours in the day. Regardless, it is very interesting reading to learn the process of creating a XenServer template.

Considering XenServer is now free, it stands to reason that it will attract Ubuntu-friendlies like me. Sure, free live migration is nice, seamless integration with storage is cool too. I’ve even gotten XenApp running in the Amazon cloud in 20 minutes,   but what I really want Ubuntu 32-bit and 64-bit as supported guest VMs.

So please Citrix, drop what you are working on and get this knocked out.
