A few years ago when application virtualization wasn’t very prevalent, the choices were few so the technical solutions were easy. Today that isn’t the case. The field is getting crowded and companies deciding to leverage application virtualization need to now look for consulting guidance to match business requirements with technical solutions. 

To give you a better idea of how complex it is, the guys over at virtualfuture.info put together a really good comparison chart of application virtualization products. They did a detailed breakout of features on the top 6  of 12 vendors including Citrix, Microsoft, VMWare, Symantec, Xenocode and InstallFree. 

To demonstrate how rapidly this list is changing, they left out Novell.

Microsoft is adding software as a service (SaaS) licensing to encourage Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) virtualization adoption.  This licensing arrangement supports the idea of a future of JeOS’s (Just Enough Operating Systems) with single applications running as virtual machines on hypervisors.
